Petr Yan's prolonged recovery from back surgery has left the bantamweight division in limbo, with Sean O'Malley and Merab Dvalishvili growing impatient for a title shot.

What happened?

Sean O'Malley has been vocal about his frustration with the bantamweight division's lack of activity, particularly with regards to Petr Yan's return. O'Malley recently won a big fight at the UFC White House event, which put him back within striking distance of a bantamweight title shot. However, before he can challenge for the title, Yan must first face Merab Dvalishvili in a rematch.

Why it matters for Petr Yan

Petr Yan's recovery from back surgery has been a major talking point in the bantamweight division. The former champion underwent a nine-hour back surgery in January and a second surgery shortly after. Despite his efforts to rehab and recover, Yan's return to the Octagon remains uncertain. O'Malley has taken to social media to express his frustration with Yan's prolonged recovery, stating that he needs his champion back in the division.

What comes next?

As the bantamweight division waits for Yan's return, O'Malley has threatened to claim the title for himself if a fight is not announced by October. Meanwhile, Dvalishvili has been competing at an RAF event in Georgia, indicating that he is eager to get back into the Octagon. The UFC has yet to announce a date for Yan vs. Dvalishvili 3, leaving the bantamweight division in a state of limbo.

Petr Yan's Instagram account has been filled with videos of him rehabbing his body and working towards a return to the Octagon. Despite his efforts, Yan's recovery remains uncertain, and the bantamweight division is growing impatient for a title shot.

In a recent YouTube video, O'Malley ranted about Yan's prolonged recovery, stating that he needs his champion back in the division. O'Malley has a win over Yan from 2022 that he believes puts him in the batter's box after Yan vs. Dvalishvili 3. However, waiting leaves O'Malley twiddling his thumbs until 2027.

"What the f–k, is Petr the champ, is he active, I don't know," O'Malley ranted. "Merab was active AF, Petr's been out for a while. They fought in December. It's been January, February, March, April, May, June, July. It's been seven months. That's not terrible for a champion, but the division is on fire right now. We need our champion back and he's not. He's out there getting hair transplants and hanging out with ladyboys. It's pissing me off!"

O'Malley has also taken to social media to express his frustration with Yan's prolonged recovery. In a recent tweet, O'Malley stated that he might claim the title for himself if a fight is not announced by October.

"God, Petr. If they don't fight by October, I might just claim to be champion and defend my belt in December," O'Malley tweeted.

Despite O'Malley's frustration, Petr Yan's Instagram account has been filled with videos of him rehabbing his body and working towards a return to the Octagon. In a recent post, Yan wrote, "Continue to recover after 2 surgeries in 5 months. We are working and not giving up!"

Yan's recovery remains uncertain, and the bantamweight division is growing impatient for a title shot. As the division waits for Yan's return, O'Malley and Dvalishvili are growing more and more frustrated.
